Surfing the Cape West Coast of South Africa is popular all year round and surf spots can be found all the way up to and beyond the Namibia border. Perhaps the most frequently surfed beaches are in the Blouberg area with Big Bay, Derdesteen and Melkbos being on the list of good waves. Moving further up the coast are spots such as Shelley Point, Elands Bay and Lamberts Bay. These waves work well on good solid groundswells and travelling surfers from around the world visit these coastal regions in hope of riding some solid African surf.
Arguably the best surfing on the Cape West Coast is at Elands Bay, this spot was featured in the now old surf movie Endless Summer 2. With a solid groundswell running and in light winds the waves here can get epic. It is a left hander, almost similar to a Jeffreys Bay but in reverse. It is a freight train ride as you take off on the point towards the Crayfish Factory and it walls up ahead of you as you fly down the line. Many surfers make the trip up to Elands on weekends when the conditions are right just to hang out around the mellow village and surf the powerful reef break waves, it is not a place for beginners.
There are many semi-secret surf spots situated further up the coast from Elands Bay. Many are similar waves as the famous reef break and some people say that one or two can get even better! An off road vehicle such as a 4×4 is needed to get across the terrain to reach some of these spots which can produce classic surf conditions. If you intend on travelling to this area in search of secret spots you are going to have to have an off road vehicle and be prepared to search really hard. Unless you know somebody who knows the coast well you are going to find it hard to find certain breaks and know in which conditions they will work.
